AN EXCERPT FROM SOUL SEARCH Perhaps this too is just a dream that
I will awaken from, she thinks, but no matter how hard she tries, Isabella
cannot go back to sleep, and the stench keeps her awake. She tries to look around, but it is dark. Isabella sees a bit of light coming from
under a huge wooden door. As she pulls
herself up off the damp smelly skins to head toward the door, she realizes
that her leg has an iron chain around it. This can’t be happening! This is a nightmare! What have I gotten myself into? Where am I?
Andrew, where are you? How
stupid of me to really have believed in a knight in shining armor and the
dream of living happily ever after.
What a stupid little child I’ve been.
If I get out of this alive I will stop this foolish game and go
home. This is no place for a city girl
like me. Isabella’s thoughts are interrupted by the door opening. A faceless man in a black cloak approaches and removes the chain from her leg. Isabella tries to ask questions, but the terror in her soul keeps her lips from moving. Before Isabella can think straight, he hoists her over his shoulder and carries her barbarian style from the gloomy room. Isabella is carted down some narrow stone steps, through a maze of halls and rooms, and deposited on a pile of sheepskin in the middle of a large room. Her “escort” leaves without a word. Two ornate doors at the other end of the room open and a little man dressed in dreadful finery approaches.
